U.S. National Team star midfielder Heather O’Reilly has joined the Boston Breakers for the 2012 WPSL Elite League season. O’Reilly, who scored the lone goal in the 2009 WPS Championship to give Sky Blue FC the inaugural title, will train with the Breakers and be available at games when she is not on duty with the U.S. Women’s National Team.
O’Reilly and the U.S. travel next month to Japan to play in the Women’s Kirin Challenge Cup against Japan and Brazil. They will face Japan on April 1 at Yurtec Stadium in Sendai (match will be televised live on ESPN2 and streamed on ESPN3 at 6:30 a.m. ET). On April 3, the U.S. takes on Brazil at Fukuda Denshi Arena in Chiba. That game will be streamed on ESPN3 at a time to be announced.
A Olympic gold medalist at the 2008 Summer Games in Beijing and at the 2004 Games in Greece, O’Reilly also has appeared in two FIFA Women’s World Cups (2007 and 2011) for the U.S. The former University of North Carolina star made her national team debut on Oct. 6, 2002, against Italy at the age of 17.
The 27-year-old two-time WPS all-star from East Brunswick, N.J., had four goals and nine assists in her three-year WPS career. She started 49 of the 50 games she has appeared in. In 2011 with Sky Blue FC, O’Reilly netted one goal and an assist in 11 games. In 2010, O’Reilly scored one goal to go along with five assists. In 2009, a year in which she scored two goals and five assists, O’Reilly served as the team’s co-captain.
