(Sept. 10, 2015) – The Boston Breakers announced today that Tom Durkin has stepped down as head coach of the professional team and will fulfill a director of coaching role in the Boston Breakers Academy.

“We would like to thank Tom for his hard work and commitment over the last two years while he served as head coach,” Boston Breakers general manager Lee Billiard said.

Durkin was appointed head coach on Sept. 3, 2014. In two seasons in the National Women’s Soccer League with the Breakers, he amassed a record of 10-29-5. Prior to the 2014 season Durkin served as an assistant coach for the Breakers over the final two weeks of the 2013 NWSL season.

In his new role Durkin will oversee the coach education, curriculum development, and player development plans for the Boston Breakers Academy. Durkin will also sit on the Breakers Academy board and be an important part of the academy programs growth across the state.

"We are pleased to be keeping Tom involved in the organization and in a position we can really benefit from his amazing soccer knowledge,” Billiard added. “The Academy program is really important to us, and Tom has great experience in building academy programs, such as IMG Academies in Florida, and great knowledge in educating coaches"

Durkin previously served as a coach for the FC Celtic Bolts of the U.S. Soccer Development Academy and worked as Academy Director for IMG Academies in Bradenton, Fla., the home of U.S. Soccer’s U-16 and U-17 men’s national teams residency programs. There, he worked as head coach and general manager of Bradenton Academics, a USL Premier Development League team that, over his tenure with the club, featured U.S. Men’s National Team players Michael Parkhurst, Heath Pearce, and Aron Jóhannsson. Durkin is a U.S. Soccer staff coach, instructing A license courses.

“An immediate search for a new head coach has started,” Billiard said “It is important we get this right as we have great ambitions in the coming years."
