(Aug. 3, 2017) – Coming back from the international break, the Boston Breakers are on home turf this Friday, August 4, to face the ninth-place FC Kanas City at 7 p.m. ET at Jordan Field in Allston, Mass.
Before the international break, the Breakers fell, 1-0, to sixth-place Houston Dash on July 22 and are ready to change momentum as they face FC Kansas City. The Breakers last meeting with Kansas City was the opening weekend of the 2017 season, a 2-0 loss April 16 on the road.
“Friday is a must-win game for both teams,“ Boston Breakers head coach Matt Beard said. “We felt we had a great opportunity to get points in Houston, and unfortunately that wasn’t to be. We want to bounce back with a win on Friday night.”
The Breakers sit in eighth place in the National Women’s Soccer League (NWSL) standings with a 3-7-5 record and 14 points. FC Kansas City is in ninth place with a 3-7-4 record and 13 points. Boston is five points behind seventh-place Orlando and one point ahead of Kansas City. FCKC head into Friday’s match with four consecutive losses and a five-game winless streak on the road.
Sydney Leroux leads Kansas with three goals and one assist. Alexa Newfield (two goals, two assists) and Maegan Kelly (two goals, one assist) add to the attack, with all three players accounting for seven out of 14 total goals this season. Goalkeeper Nicole Barnhart is second in the NWSL with 60 saves and three clean sheets.
The Breakers attack is led by Adriana Leon (three goals, three assists) and Natasha Dowie (three goals, two assists). Leon and Dowie account for six of the 10 goals Boston has this season. Megan Oyster has been strong on the backline with a team-high 69 clearances and 12 blocks. Boston has been successful on home turf with all three wins coming at Jordan Field.
After Friday’s matchup, the Breakers head down the coast to face the Washington Spirit on Saturday, Aug. 12 at 3:30 p.m. ET at Maryland SoccerPlex in Boyds, Md. Boston will come back home to play the Houston Dash the following Wednesday (Aug. 16, 7: 30 p.m. ET) at Jordan Field in Allston, Mass.
