(May 22, 2015) – The Boston Breakers got a game-tying goal from Stephanie McCaffrey in the 60th minute Friday night to keep Boston’s home unbeaten streak intact in a 1-1 tie with Sky Blue FC.

MATCH HIGHLIGHTS

In front of 1,861 fans at Soldiers Field Soccer Stadium in Allston, Mass., the Breakers fell behind early. In the eighth minute, Sky Blue FC midfielder Katy Freels took the ball up the middle of the field before stopping 20 yards out and unleashing a shot that beat Breakers keeper Jami Kranich. For Freels, it was her team-leading third goal of the season.

The Breakers, who are 2-0-1 at home this season, came close to tying up the match twice in the first half. In the 28th minute, McCaffrey crossed to Kristie Mewis, but Mewis’ shot went just over the bar. In the 35th minute, a cross came to Rafinha at top of box. She controlled it with her right foot, let it bounce, then hit it on the half volley straight at Sky Blue FC keeper Brittany Cameron.

“We had a really slow start (but) I think a really good response in the second half. We did enough in the second half where we should’ve won the game,” Boston Breakers head coach Tom Durkin said. “Now we need to work on penetrating.”

The Breakers came out with more pressure in the second half and began peppering Cameron with shots. Mewis had a shot stopped in the 51st minute, and in the 60th minute, Morgan Marlborough hit a shot from point-blank range, but Cameron came up with a massive stop. However, the Breakers kept pushing and in the 60th minute, McCaffrey scored her second goal of the season and more importantly, the game-tying tally.

Defender Lauren Lazo played a ball over the top and into the box, and Cameron darted off her line to punch it out. The ball came right to McCaffrey, who volleyed it in to make it a 1-1 game.

Sky Blue picked up some momentum late, but the Breakers held their ground. Mollie Pathman blocked a shot in front of goal off the foot of Nadia Nadim in the 76th minute. Meg Morris hit the crossbar two minutes later, and in the 82nd minute, Kranich denied Nadim on a blistering shot from 20 yards out to preserve the tie.

The Breakers return to action Saturday, May 30, to face defending NWSL champions FC Kansas City. To purchase tickets, visit www.breakerstickets.com.
