Breakers open Florida trip with 5-0 win over Jamaica

(March 25, 2015) – The Boston Breakers got five goals from five different players en route to a 5-0 win Wednesday night over the Jamaican Women’s National Team at Saints Field on the campus of Flagler College.

“It was nice to win. We had six definite objectives that we wanted to accomplish, and I think we got about halfway there,” Boston Breakers head coach Tom Durkin said. “I think there were some nerves at the beginning. I think the first group settled down a bit, but they’re capable of playing much better, and I think they’re aware of that. The second group, I thought, started out really well. There were no big shockers, but there were some pleasant surprises.”

In front of an estimated 1,100 fans, the Breakers struck for three goals in the first half en route to their second straight preseason victory. The scoring started early as Stephanie McCaffrey put the Breakers in front, 1-0, taking advantage of a failed clearance by Jamaica. Rafaela’s corner kick dropped in front of goal, but Jamaica couldn’t clear it out of the box. McCaffrey jumped on the loose ball and put it past Jamaica keeper Kalijah Terilli.

Three minutes later, Kristie Mewis made it a 2-0 game, receiving a great ball from Bia just inside the 18 and rocketing it past Terilli. The Breakers took a 3-0 lead in the 27th minute when Cat Whitehill hit a free kick from 25 yards out that Terilli got a hand on but could not keep out.

The Breakers maintained the momentum in the second half and struck for a fourth goal in the 54th minute. Bianca Brinson started the attack and put a shot on goal from just outside the 18 that Terilli couldn’t control. Morgan Marlborough was right there and darted in, flicking the ball past Terilli to give the Breakers a 4-0 lead. Brinson capped the scoring in the 69th minute, heading in a well-played long ball by Samantha Lofton.

The Breakers return to action Saturday in at Winter Springs Park, just outside of Orlando. They will play Jamaica at 7:30 p.m. ET to round out their preseason trip to Florida.
