(April 22, 2016) – The Boston Breakers are set to host their 11th home opener in franchise history when they take on Seattle Reign FC Sunday, April 24, at Jordan Field in Allston, Mass. Kickoff is set for 6:30 p.m. ET.
The Breakers are coming off a 1-0 loss on the road last Saturday against the Washington Spirit. Meanwhile, the Reign are also seeking their first win of the year after falling to Sky Blue FC, 2-1, at home last Sunday.
“I’m really looking forward to my first home game in charge of the Boston Breakers, especially knowing that we have virtually sold out,” Breakers head coach Matt Beard said. “The fact we are playing the favorites to win the championship this year will give me a great benchmark as to where we are as a group right now and for me to know where we need to get to. I know as a team we are looking forward to putting in a good team performance and hopefully start with a home win.”
The Breakers (0-1-0, 0 points) fell behind early against Washington a week ago in their 2016 National Women’s Soccer League season opener, but kept the Spirit at bay for the remainder of the match. In the final third, the Breakers created a few chances, including one where Kristie Mewis crossed in front of goal to Stephanie McCaffrey, but the second-year Breaker hit her shot just wide of Washington keeper Stephanie Labbe. Later in the match, Louise Schillgard nearly scored on a corner kick, curling it on goal from the left of Labbe.
Seattle (0-1-0, 0 points) conceded in the 15th minute but found the equalizer from Merritt Mathias shortly into the second half. But Sky Blue came back just 12 minutes later to nab the game-winner against the two-time defending NWSL Shield winners.
Sunday’s home opener vs. Seattle is close to a sellout. Tickets can still be purchased at www.breakerstickets.com. Following Sunday’s match, the Breakers remain at home, taking on Portland Thorns FC on Sunday, May 1.
