(May 2, 2017) – Boston Breakers forward Adriana Leon was voted the National Women’s Soccer League (NWSL) Player of the Week by the NWSL Media Association for Week 3 of the 2017 NWSL season.
Leon, 24, had a goal and two assists to lead the Breakers to 3-0 home victory over the Seattle Reign FC as Boston earned its first-ever win against the two-time NWSL Shield winners after going winless in the 10 previous matches (0-9-1) between the sides.
The Mississauga, Canada native opened the scoring in the 11th minute when she seized on a cross that dropped in front of her but still had a lot to do as she worked her way around two defenders and then Seattle goalkeeper Haley Kopmeyer before slotting home her first goal of the season. The Canada international turned provider on Boston’s second and third goals as she played in midfielder Rose Lavelle for the No. 1 overall draft pick’s first NWSL goal in the 15th minute before also setting up forward Natasha Dowie for her second goal of the year in the 52nd minute.
Leon finished the match against Seattle with three shots (two on target) and three chances created on 34 touches in 85 minutes before being lifted for a substitute.
Her performance helped the Breakers snap a 10-game winless run against the Reign that was tied for the longest streak in the league by one team against a single opponent. Sky Blue FC is the other club who currently shares the record – having not won in 10 straight games against the Chicago Red Stars.
It is the first time Leon has been honored as the NWSL Player of the Week and the ninth time a Breakers player has won the award. She is the first Canada international to win the award since Chicago Red Stars goalkeeper Karina LeBlanc claimed the honor in the final week of the 2015 NWSL season, although fellow international Christine Sinclair was twice recognized as NWSL Player of the Month during that span.
The Boston Breakers will return to action Sunday, May 7 at 6 p.m. ET against the North Carolina Courage at Jordan Field in in Boston.
The NWSL Player of the Week is selected each week of the regular season by the NWSL Media Association, a collection of writers that cover the league on a consistent basis. For more information on the NWSL Media Association, follow them on Twitter.
