Breakers fall to FC Kansas City on the road

(Aug. 22, 2015) – The Boston Breakers returned to action for the first time since Aug. 8, taking on FC Kansas City at Swope Soccer Village in Kansas City, Mo. Saturday night. The host Blues scored once in the first half and added two quick goals early in the second half to take a 3-0 victory.

The Breakers (4-11-4), coming off a 2-1 victory at home against the Washington Spirit on Aug. 8, fell behind in the 29th minute when former Breaker Amy Rodriguez scored to make it a 1-0 game. FC Kansas City captain Leigh Ann Robinson placed a ball from the corner right to Rodriguez, who beat Breakers keeper Alyssa Naeher (seven saves) for the first goal of the match.

The Blues, playing in front of 2,321 fans at Swope Soccer Village, tried to stretch their lead before halftime, but the Breakers cleared out a pair or threatening corners, and Naeher came up big on a few occasions to keep it a one-goal game heading into the second half. Captain Julie King also stepped up to keep the match close, clearing a Rodriguez shot off the line in the 36th minute.

Four minutes into the second half, Lauren Holiday, who played for the Breakers in 2010 and 2011, scored off an assist from Rodriguez. She then returned the favor to Rodriguez, assisting on her goal just two minutes later to put FC Kansas City ahead, 3-0, a lead the hosts never relinquished.

The Breakers return to action Wednesday, Aug. 26 at Seattle Reign FC before heading to Houston Aug. 30 to face the Dash in their season finale.
