Breakers edge first-place Sky Blue FC, 3-2

Snap five-game winless streak

The Boston Breakers snapped a five-game winless streak with a 3-2 victory over first-place Sky Blue FC Sunday night in front of 1,876 fans at Dilboy Stadium in Somerville. Two goals from Sydney Leroux and one by Mariah Nogueira led the Breakers to the win.

The Boston Breakers snapped a five-game winless streak with a 3-2 victory over first-place Sky Blue FC Sunday night in front of 1,876 fans at Dilboy Stadium in Somerville. Two goals from Sydney Leroux and one by Mariah Nogueira powered the Breakers to their first win since May 25.

“We’ve been saying since the beginning, if we play well for 90 minutes, then we are one of the best teams in this league, but you have to play well consistently, and you have to play well the whole game,” Breakers Head Coach Lisa Cole said. “Today we didn’t give up, we didn’t get frustrated. We did give up two goals, but the difference was, it didn’t throw us off our game. If we do the work, we’ll be OK.”

Both keepers - Boston’s Alyssa Naeher and Sky Blue FC’s Brittany Cameron - were tested early on, but neither budged. Cameron stopped a pair of shots in the first 15 minutes, one from Lianne Sanderson and one by Katie Schoepfer. Naeher denied Sophie Schmidt on a 1-on-1 situation in the 13th minute. Then in the 15th minute, Heather O’Reilly made a blazing-fast run up the left flank before cutting back into the box to get a shot off on goal, but Cameron was there to make the save.

Boston broke through in the 29th minute. Defender Jazmyne Avant, signed Saturday after being waived by Portland, made her debut a memorable one. The speedy outside back took it down the right side of the field before crossing into the box. That’s where Leroux got on the end of the cross and hit it past Cameron for the 1-0 lead.

“I think that’s one of my favorite things to do as an outside back. I love defending, and I love tracking back on people, but one of my favorite things is to use my speed to get into the attack,” Avant said.

The lead was short-lived, however, as Schmidt took a ball played over the top by Monica Ocampo and beat Naeher to level the match.

The Breakers (4-5-3, 15 points) wasted little time regaining the lead. O’Reilly took a corner and placed it perfectly at the back post for Nogueira to head it past Cameron to give Boston a 2-1 lead. For Nogueira, it was her second goal in as many games. For O’Reilly, it was her second assist of the season.

Six minutes later, the Breakers went ahead, 3-1, on Leroux’s second goal of the night and seventh of the season, tying her with Abby Wambach for second overall in the league. Leroux cracked a shot from 20 yards out and past Cameron, who had no chance at stopping the wonder strike.

Sky Blue FC (8-3-3, 27 points) got one back in the 58th minute. Naeher made a tremendous save on a shot from by Schmidt, but Ocampo pounced on the rebound to score her fourth goal of the season.

Naeher made the save of the game in the 75th minute, stopping a point-blank shot by Schmidt, preventing a potential game-tying goal.

The Breakers head out on a West Coast road trip, first stopping in Seattle Wednesday to take on the Reign (2-9-2, 8 points). They then travel to JELD-WEN Field Saturday to face second-place Portland Thorns FC (8-3-2, 26 points). The Breakers remain on the road and play at Sky Blue FC July 13 before returning home July 21 to meet up with Portland.
