Breakers downed by Pride in Orlando

(June 3, 2017) – The Boston Breakers fell to the Orlando Pride, 2-0, Saturday night on a rainy evening in Orlando, Fla. in front of 5,185 fans at Orlando City Soccer Stadium.

The scoring opened in the ninth minute when five-time FIFA World Player of the Year, Marta, converted a penalty kick. Breakers keeper Abby Smith was called for a yellow card, and Orlando was awarded a penalty, when Smith came out to cut down Marta’s angle inside the box one minute earlier.

The Pride (2-3-3) made it a 2-0 game in the 13th minute when Jasmyne Spencer knocked in a cross from Camila.

Boston’s first threat came seconds before Orlando’s second goal when Tiffany Weimer had a good look on goal. She took a shot from outside the box, but Orlando defender Toni Pressley came out of nowhere to block the shot. In the 18th minute, Weimer set up Brooke Elby, who came darting in from the left wing. Elby’s shot went just wide of goal.

The Breakers (2-4-2) had a few chances in the second half, but all denied by Orando goalkeeper Aubrey Bledsoe.

In the 64th minute, Adriana Leon took an off-balance shot from 20 yards out, managing to get it on frame, but Bledsoe was there to make the save. Six minutes later, Julie King sent a great cross into the box, headed on target by Rosie White, but again, Bledsoe made the stop. A late header by King was also denied.

On the other end, Smith made a pair of huge saves to keep the Pride from scoring again, denying Alanna Kennedy in the 82nd minute and racing out to stop Marta in the 84th minute.

The Breakers head to North Carolina (June 17) before returning home Saturday, June 24, at 4 p.m. ET to face North Carolina at Jordan Field. Tickets to all home games are available by calling 617-945-1704 or by visiting

Notes: Defender and captain Julie King moved closer to second all-time in franchise appearances. Tonight marked her 95th appearance for the Breakers, tying Katie Schoepfer for second all-time. King is now seven appearances behind Kristine Lilly for most all-time in franchise history.
