(March 28, 2017) – The Boston Breakers continued their preseason Tuesday night at ForeKicks in Taunton, Mass. and beat the New England Futbol Club U-15 boys, 5-1. The win comes three days after the Breakers topped Boston College, 5-1, to open preseason.
“I’m really pleased. It was a massive improvement from Saturday, with the ball, without the ball,” Boston Breakers head coach Matt Beard said. “We had a chance to break the game down from Saturday, showing them clips on certain expectations, but I felt some of the football we played tonight was fantastic across the board.”
The two teams played three, 30-minute periods on a wet and cold night in Taunton. The Breakers had a flurry of shots in the first period, but NEFC managed to keep them away from danger. The scoring opened in the second period and came quickly with the Breakers scoring the first three goals in an eight-minute span.
It started in the 40th minute, and it all began off the foot of Emilie Haavi, who sent in a cross from the corner, which then ricocheted off Natasha Dowie. The ball landed at the feet of Rosie White, who buried her shot to give the Breakers a 1-0 lead.
Defender Brooke Elby scored her first goal of the preseason, taking a pass from Dowie before cutting into the box and firing into goal in the 45th minute. That put the Breakers ahead, 2-0. They added a third goal just three minutes later, and it came from Adriana Leon, who notched her fourth goal of the preseason. NEFC cut the deficit to 3-1 with four minutes remaining in the second period.
The Breakers added two more goals in the third and final period. In the 65th minute, Leon connected with rookie Ifeoma Onumonu, who scored her second goal in as many games. White tallied her second goal of the game and third of preseason in the 73rd minute.
“It’s a great platform for us to be on and to progress from, and we can only get better from tonight’s performance,” Beard said. “We are going to lose a few players to international duty, so other players can get minutes under their belt as well. When everyone comes back from international duty, we’ll have some work to do, but it was a really, really positive night. It’s like night and day with the team in comparison to last year, so I’m really, really pleased.”
The Breakers return to action Saturday, April 1, at 7 p.m. ET against the University of Connecticut. The match takes place at Jordan Field in Allston, Mass.
