(April 7, 2017) – The Boston Breakers wrapped up their 2017 NWSL preseason Friday night at Jordan Field in Allston, Mass., getting two goals and three assists from Natasha Dowie and two goals from Tiffany Weimer in a 6-0 win over the University of Connecticut.

“Tonight was a good exercise for us to put in practice what we’ve been working on and what we’ve been talking about. It puts us in a positive frame of mind going into next weekend,” Boston Breakers head coach Matt Beard said. “I’m glad Tats (Dowie) got a couple goals tonight. She’s had a good preseason. It’s good for her to get a few goals because she’s had a few chances in preseason where keepers have made some good saves. So for her, that’s positive.”

The Breakers opened the scoring in the 10th minute Friday night against UConn. It began off a corner kick from Rosie White. The New Zealand international sent the ball to the top of the box, where it was headed on goal by Dowie. Weimer was right in front of goal and used her head to redirect Dowie’s header past UConn for the early advantage.

Seven minutes later, the Breakers added a second goal. This time off the foot of Dowie, who was served a great ball from White. Dowie slotted it past the keeper to give the Breakers a 2-0 lead.

Brooke Elby delivered a quality service to the far post in the 33rd minute, and White headed it in for a 3-0 advantage. The Breakers rounded out the first-half scoring with just seconds left. In the 45th minute, White and Dowie connected again, this time with Dowie on the scoring end to give the Breakers a 4-0 lead heading into the second half.

The Breakers opened the second-half scoring in the 57th minute. Dowie back heeled a pass to Weimer, who dribbled by one defender and calmly slotted it past the UConn keeper. With now a 5-0 lead, the Breakers tacked on one more, and it came in the 87th minute from rookie Hayley Dowd. The former Boston College star scored her first of preseason, hitting in a cross from Dowie from close range.

Keepers Abby Smith and Sammy Jo Prudhomme combined on the shutout. Smith got the start, and Prudhomme played the second half.

“I’ve been really pleased with preseason,” Beard added. “There’s still plenty to do, but we’re starting to see some of the detail we’re talking about and seeing them come together, which is very pleasing.”
