Breakers back at Harvard Sunday to host Portland

Thorns can clinch playoffs with a win


(Aug. 9, 2014) - Coming off a frustrating loss in an abbreviated midweek match in Kansas City, the Boston Breakers will return home to Harvard Stadium Sunday night as they host the Portland Thorns FC in the first of their final three games of the season.

Set to kickoff at 6:30 p.m., the Breakers will enter Sunday evening’s match 4-5-12 on the season. While Boston is out of playoff contention, Portland travels to Boston with an opportunity to clinch a berth in NWSL postseason play. Thorns FC (9-7-6) can clinch a playoff spot on Sunday with a win and either a Chicago Red Stars draw or loss on Saturday against FC Kansas City.

Boston and Portland have met twice previously this season. In their last meeting on July 20th at Portland’s Providence Park, Thorns FC came back from a one-goal deficit three times throughout the match before then scoring four unanswered goals to earn a 6-3 win. Thorns forward and Canadian National Team standout Christine Sinclair scored the first hat-trick in Thorns history during the July 20th match. Sinclair has scored four of her seven 2014 season goals against Boston. Portland forward and USWNT star Alex Morgan also added a goal and two assists that night while the two teams also combined to score the most goals in a match (9) in NWSL history.

For Boston, midfielder Heather O’Reilly leads the team with eight goals and four assists, and has tallied at least one point in five straight matches. Goalkeeper Alyssa Naeher leads the NWSL in saves (85).

Thorns FC have conceded just 16 goals on the road this season and have earned at least one point in three of its last four road contests.
