(Jan. 8, 2014) – The Boston Breakers today announced the club’s lists of protected and unprotected players for Friday’s NWSL Expansion Draft. The Houston Dash will become the ninth club to join the National Women’s Soccer League when they begin play this season. They will be able to select up to ten (10) players in the Expansion Draft, though no club can lose more than two players. The results of the Expansion Draft will be announced starting at 11 a.m. (ET).
Each current NWSL club has had the opportunity to protect nine (playoff teams) or ten (non-playoff teams) players from their 2014 roster. Any club with more than two (2) U.S. allocated players must leave at least one U.S. allocated player unprotected. The Dash will be allowed to select no more than two (2) U.S. allocated players, one (1) Canadian allocated player and one (1) Mexican allocated player.
Only two players will be exempt from the Expansion Draft, the Boston Breakers’ Kyah Simon (acl surgery) and Western New York Flash’s Alex Sahlen (pregnancy) as they will be unavailable for the entire 2014 season. In addition, clubs have until March 10 to sign any player whose rights are a hold-over from 2013 season.
