Boston Breakers announce 2017 Team Awards

(Oct. 5, 2017) – The Boston Breakers announced Thursday night at their end-of-season meet the team event the winners of the 2017 Team Awards, sponsored by Steward Health Care. Four of the six awards were voted on by fans, while one was conducted by players, and another determined by statistics.

Midfielder Angela Salem was voted Team Most Valuable Player by fans and Players’ Player by her teammates. Salem played in a team-high 24 games, logging the most minutes on the club (2,117). The holding midfielder appeared in her 100th National Women’s Soccer League game on Sept. 10, a 1-0 loss at home against Portland. Salem was named Players’ Player for the second year in a row.

Golden Boot winner Natasha Dowie secured her second-straight award in that category, tallying a season-high seven goals. Dowie scored a pair of goals in Boston’s 2017 season finale, a 4-3 loss at home against Sky Blue FC. Dowie’s goals this year came against Sky Blue (three), Seattle, Portland, Washington, and Houston.

Captain Julie King was voted Defender of the Year. The sixth-year Breaker played in 21 games, totaling 1,890 minutes, third highest on the team and second most amongst defenders. King scored one goal – away against the Orlando Pride on Sept. 2. She had 88 clearances and a 74.6 percent passing accuracy.

Forward/defender Midge Purce was voted Rookie of the Year. The former Harvard University star played in 22 games (1,387 minutes) for the Breakers in 2017. The No. 9 overall pick in the 2017 NWSL College Draft, Purce tallied one goal and two assists this season. She scored her first professional goal on July 1, a 1-0 win over Washington at home.

Midfielder Rosie White won Goal of the Year for one of her two strikes against FC Kansas City. In the 2-2 tie on Aug. 4 at home, White’s left-footed strike from distance, off an assist from Katie Stengel, was the goal of the season. White finished the year with four goals, ranking her third on the team.
