(June 30, 2017) – The Boston Breakers announced today that the club has claimed forward Katie Stengel off waivers. To make room for Stengel on the roster, the Breakers have waived defender Kylie Strom.
Stengel, recently waived by the Washington Spirit, started three of the five games she appeared in during the 2017 season. In 2016 with the Spirit, Stengel scored four goals and tallied one assist in 21 games (10 starts).
“I’m really happy we were able to get this done in a short period of time,” Boston Breakers President of Soccer Operations and Development Lee Billiard said. “It’s very tough to not sign a player like Katie when they become available. We are excited to have her in Breakers blue.”
The 25-year-old Melbourne, Fla. native joined the Spirit ahead of the 2016 NWSL season. Prior to playing with Washington, Stengel helped lead Bayern Munich to the 2014-2015 Frauen-Bundesliga title. She led the team with nine goals.
"Katie is a player that will bring more quality, experience, and competition to our roster,” Boston Breakers head coach Matt Beard said. “I'm looking forward to working with her.”
On the international level, Stengel was a member of the U.S. U-23 and U-20 teams. She was a member of the U.S. U-20 team that won the 2012 FIFA U-20 Women’s World Cup.
The former Wake Forest University star holds the school record for goals. She scored 50 in 75 games for Wake Forest and was a three-time NSCAA All-American.
Strom, who did not see any action in 2017, started three of the seven matches she appeared in, logging 344 minutes, in 2016 as a rookie.
“We are very thankful for the work Kylie did as a Breaker,” Billiard said. “She has worked incredibly hard each day and has been a great teammate. We wish her well moving forward.”
The Breakers return home Saturday, July 1, to take on the Washington Spirit at 4 p.m. ET. Tickets are available by calling 617-945-1704 or by visiting breakerstickets.com.
