(May 3, 2017) – Boston Breakers midfielder Rose Lavelle was voted the National Women’s Soccer League (NWSL) Player of the Month by the NWSL Media Association for the month of April of the 2017 NWSL season.
Lavelle, 21, had a goal and an assist in three games during April to help lead the Breakers to a 2-1-0 record as Boston won two games in a single month for the first time since May 2015. The pair of victories also represent the first time the Breakers have ever won two matches during the first calendar month of an NWSL season.
The Cincinnati native notched her first NWSL assist in a 1-0 victory over Sky Blue on April 23 after she ran at the opposing defense before picking out Natasha Dowie for a 37th-minute goal as Boston snapped a six-match winless run dating back to last season.
The U.S. international, who will turn 22 on May 14, followed up on that performance with her first NWSL goal in a 3-0 win against the Seattle Reign FC on April 29 as she ran onto a through ball from forward Adriana Leon and then rode a challenge by defender Kristen McNabb before displaying quick feet to shoot across her body and tuck the ball inside the far post in the 15th minute.
It was the first time in club history the Breakers beat Seattle – ending a 10-game winless run against the Reign that featured a 0-9-1 record during the stretch.
The No. 1 overall draft pick in the 2017 NWSL College Draft out of the University of Wisconsin played 262 out of 270 minutes possible in the month and was a box-to-box presence with eight tackles over the three games in April to go along with her contributions on offense.
It is the first time a rookie has been named as the NWSL Player of the Month in her first month in the league. Lavelle joins FC Kansas City midfielder Erika Tymrak (July 2013) and Chicago Red Stars midfielder Sophia Huerta (May 2015) as the only other rookies to win the award. She is also just the second No. 1 overall draft pick to earn the accolade, following in the footsteps of U.S. international and former Washington Spirit forward Crystal Dunn (August 2015).
The Boston Breakers will return to action Sunday, May 7 at 6 p.m. ET against the North Carolina Courage at Jordan Field in in Boston.
The NWSL Player of the Month is selected each month of the regular season by the NWSL Media Association, a collection of writers that cover the league on a consistent basis. For more information on the NWSL Media Association, follow them on Twitter.
